Vardenafil is the active ingredient and generic name for Levitra.
Levitra is an improvement on the original erectile dysfunction drug
Viagra (Sildenafil). Although Viagra is
the most famous of all the erectile dysfunction medicines, Levitra
(Vardenafil) Cialis (Tadalafil) continue to sell in vast quantities
around the world.
Many men prefer Levitra (Vardenafil) to Viagra
because Levitra becomes active a lot quicker than Viagra. Viagra
also needs to be taken about an hour
before sexual intercourse whereas Levitra starts working in
under twenty minutes. Viagra is believed
to work in up to 80% of men but Vardenafil is
thought to work in 80 to 90% of men and the duration of the
drugs compare more favourably with Vardenafil,
Vardenafil lasting up to five hours compared to Viagra with
four hours.
Vardenafil is typically
available in 5 mg, 10 mg dosage strength and If these do not give a
full erection, a 20 mg dosage is available.
The action of
Vardenafil is as a PDE5 inhibitor.
In simple terms, Vardenafil widens the blood vessels in the penis by
stopping the action of PDE5. All sex
starts in the brain with a sexual thought or by physical
stimulation. Signals are sent to the penis to create an erection. An
erection is triggered by the release of Nitric Oxide which travels
to the blood vessels and spongy spaces of the penis where it sets of
a change reaction where another chemical is created called Cyclic
GMP. Cyclic GMP makes the blood vessel open up which allows the
spongy spaces inside the penis to engorge with blood which leads to
erection. After sex, the body breaks down Cyclic GMP using the
enzyme PDE5 (phosphodiesterase type 5)
in order to take away the
erection. Vardenafil acts against PDE5 allowing Cyclic GMP to remain
in the penis creating a stronger erection.
